15 Year History Of Te LBC Pirate Invastion Festival

The Pirate Invasion of Long Beach California has grown from a local gathering into one of the most anticipated nautical-themed festivals in Southern California, proudly standing as one of the largest pirate festivals west of the Mississippi. The event’s rich history traces its origins back to 2011, when it first dropped anchor at the iconic Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier in Long Beach. What began as a bold new idea made an immediate and massive splash—research from historical pier proposals indicates that the Pirate Invasion quickly became one of the largest and most well-attended events in the entire history of the Belmont Pier.

The festival was born from the passion and vision of its founders, Fred Kammar and his wife, Michelle Kammar. Driven by their love for pirate lore and community celebration, Fred and Michelle set out to create an immersive, family-style festival. Through their hard work, the Kammars established a foundational experience where families, history enthusiasts, and swashbucklers alike could come together to enjoy interactive pirate encampments, spectacular cannon firings, and a lively marketplace right on the water.

As the event expanded over the years, it truly became a family legacy. Fred and Michelle’s daughter, Jesse Ortloff, alongside her husband, Greg Ortloff, eventually took over the production of the festival. Under their dedicated leadership, the Pirate Invasion successfully navigated through its next phases of growth. Jesse and Greg steered the event to include over 80 costumed entertainers, dozens of unique vendors, magical mermaid attractions, and thrilling sword fights, all while maintaining the authentic, welcoming community atmosphere the Kammars originally envisioned.

Today, as the Pirate Invasion joins the TJK Production Group’s unified family of events, it proudly honors the foundational work of the Kammar and Ortloff families. The festival continues to build upon the incredible legacy they established at Belmont Pier, remaining a testament to their original vision: a vibrant, swashbuckling weekend that brings the magic and adventure of the high seas right to the shores of Long Beach California.

The modern pirate community is a vibrant, global subculture uniting history enthusiasts, maritime buffs, and dedicated cosplayers. In the United States and around the world, this passionate group is bound together by a shared love for nautical lore, the golden age of piracy, and the romanticized ideals of freedom and high-seas adventure. It is a highly inclusive, family-friendly culture where participants dedicate significant time to crafting historically accurate garments and adopting seafaring personas.

This community truly comes alive at dozens of pirate festivals and maritime events held annually across the country. These gatherings transform ordinary harbors and parks into bustling, interactive havens. Attendees immerse themselves in sprawling encampments, lively sea shanty performances, mock naval battles, and bustling artisan marketplaces. Beyond mere entertainment, these festivals serve as vital annual reunions, fostering lifelong friendships and ensuring the adventurous spirit of pirate lore continues to thrive.
